Title Sequence Timeline of 'The Moulin Rouge'

I analysed the opening scene of the Moulin Rouge by putting into a timeline. I think this will be very helpful when I am planning my own film, as the timeline allows me to see how shots change and how fast they change. They really help you to see the style of the director of the film and highlight some interesting techniques that you make not otherwise notice unless you take the film apart into such small details.

  1. This looks impressively detailed, Annabelle. There don't seem to be many actual titles in this title sequence - usually there are far more. What is the reason for this, do you think?

  2. Maybe if the titles continued into the introduction of the film it would take the emphasis and focus away from the scene? We're supposed to be listening to Toulouse describing the protagonist for the film and subtitles below saying who is in the film would not only distract us from the film, but break the reality to some degree?

  3. Could well be. I can't help thinking that if you did this in your AS film opening, you might lose marks. I guess an established filmmaker can break conventions more easily to make a point!
